Board Treasurer 

About I Am Someone 

IAS is a volunteer-run Australian charity that has been supporting communities in Kenya, Uganda and Sierra Leone for more than 20 years. We work with local communities and partners to deliver practical projects across education, health, livelihoods and community development. 

As IAS continues to develop, we are strengthening our governance, financial management and organisational systems and are seeking an experienced Treasurer to join our Board. 

The Role 

The Treasurer is responsible for providing financial oversight and stewardship of IAS, supporting the Board to understand the organisation's financial position, manage financial risks and make informed decisions. 

The Treasurer will work collaboratively with the Board and operational volunteers to ensure IAS has appropriate financial controls, reporting and processes for a small, volunteer-run charity. 

This is a Board position and does not require the Treasurer to undertake day-to-day bookkeeping or financial administration. 

Key Responsibilities 

The Treasurer will: 

• Provide financial oversight and advice to the Board. 

• Monitor IAS's financial position, cash flow, budgets and overall financial sustainability. 

• Review and present regular financial reports to the Board. 

• Support the development and monitoring of annual budgets. 

• Help ensure appropriate financial controls, approval processes and separation of duties are in place. 

• Monitor financial risks and identify areas requiring Board attention. 

• Oversee the preparation of annual financial statements and support the audit/review process as required. 

• Help ensure IAS meets its financial and reporting obligations as an Australian charity. 

• Support the Board to make informed decisions about expenditure, fundraising, projects and organisational priorities. 

• Work with the Governance & Risk Board Member to strengthen the relationship between financial controls, risk management and governance. 

• Contribute to the broader strategic direction and decision-making of IAS as a Board Member. 

About You 

We are looking for someone with experience in accounting, finance, financial management, financial governance or a related field. 

Ideally, you will have: 

• Experience in a Treasurer, finance or senior financial management role. 

• An understanding of financial reporting, budgeting and cash-flow management. 

• Strong understanding of financial controls and financial risk. 

• The ability to interpret financial information and explain it clearly to non-financial Board members. 

• Good judgement and a willingness to ask questions and provide constructive challenge. 

• An understanding of the responsibilities of a Board and Treasurer. 

Experience with Australian charities, not-for-profits, the ACNC or volunteer-run organisations would be highly desirable. 

Formal accounting qualifications such as CA, CPA or equivalent are desirable but not essential where the candidate has strong relevant experience.

This is a voluntary, unpaid Board position. Board meetings are held monthly, with additional involvement required around budgeting, financial reporting and the annual financial reporting process.
