Dogs Canberra is a growing Canberra charity using the companionship of dogs to improve mental health and strengthen community connections. Through programs including our Community Walking Program, wellbeing events, and assorted support initiatives, we're creating opportunities for both people and dogs to thrive.

As our organisation continues to grow, we're looking for a Treasurer to join our Board and help guide the financial future of our charity. This is an opportunity to use your financial skills to make a genuine impact while helping shape the direction of an expanding not-for-profit.

Position and Responsibilities

We're looking for a motivated Treasurer to provide financial leadership and governance across the organisation. Working closely with the Managing Director, Board and Finance Team, you'll help ensure Dogs Canberra remains financially sustainable while supporting the growth of our programs and community impact.

Key responsibilities include (full Position Description available on request):

Financial Management:

• Oversee the organisation's financial management, including budgeting, cash flow and financial forecasting.
• Maintain financial policies, procedures and internal controls.
• Oversee banking arrangements, reconciliations and secure financial record keeping.

Budgeting and Reporting:

• Prepare the annual operating budget in collaboration with the Board.
• Monitor expenditure and report on budget performance.
• Support the organisation's long-term financial planning.

Governance and Compliance:

• Ensure compliance with ACNC requirements, accounting standards and relevant financial legislation.
• Support the preparation of annual financial statements and financial reporting requirements.

Grants and Fundraising:

• Assist with preparing grant budgets and financial sections of funding applications.
• Monitor grant expenditure and prepare financial acquittals.

Operational Finance:

• Oversee invoices, financial tracking systems and organisational financial records.
• Support the Finance Team in maintaining accurate financial documentation.

There is also the opportunity to become involved in other aspects of the organisation, whether on the ground in Canberra or remotely.

About You

We're looking for someone who enjoys using their financial skills to support a meaningful cause.

Experience in accounting, finance, bookkeeping or financial management is highly desirable. Previous experience as a Treasurer or within the not-for-profit sector is welcomed but not essential. We're equally interested in applicants with relevant tertiary qualifications or strong professional experience.

You'll be someone who communicates well, enjoys working collaboratively and can confidently manage responsibilities with a high level of integrity and attention to detail.

On average, we expect this position will require around 2–20 hours per week, although this may vary throughout the year depending on reporting periods, grant activity and organisational priorities.

While some preference is given to applicants located within the ACT, this position is also suitable for remote volunteers.
